Aboriginal Legal Service

The Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) is committed to providing a quality legal service that is appropriate to Aboriginal communities across NSW and the ACT.

What the Service Provides

Service for Victims of Family Violence

The Aboriginal Legal Service employs several Victims of Family / Domestic Violence Contact Officers who act as the first point of contact for victims of domestic violence. These officers are Aboriginal women who are highly trained and experienced in dealing with victims of family / domestic violence.

Family Law and Care and Protection Law Services

The ALS provides legal services in Family Law and Care and Protection. Whilst solicitors are based at the separate Family Law and Care and Protection units, they travel to the surrounding areas.

Telephone Custody Notification

The ALS operates a 24 hour telephone custody notification service. Any Aboriginal person arrested in NSW or the ACT should notify the ALS to obtain legal advice.

Criminal Law Services

The ALS provides legal services to Aboriginal people in the field of Criminal Law.

Civil Law

Legal Aid Commission solicitors visit ALS offices regularly to provide advice on such matters as credit and debt, discrimination, mental health, social security and other civil matters.
